Wisdom Tooth Removal in Calgary
Your wisdom teeth (also called third molars) are usually the last of your teeth to develop. As a result, there may not be enough room left for them in your mouth once they’ve erupted. Impacted wisdom teeth leads to crowding which in turn can have harmful effects if left untreated. At Abougoush Family Dental Care, we offer wisdom tooth removal in Calgary for patients of all ages. It’s important to have your wisdom teeth removed if it’s been determined that their eruption will cause dental issues. Some of the problems impacted wisdom teeth can cause include:
- Infections, causing swelling, pain and/or difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Cavities and/or gum disease in the teeth around the wisdom teeth area
- Non-infectious diseases, cysts and/or tumours (rare)
There is no “right age” to have your wisdom teeth removed. However, the younger you are, the faster the healing process typically is, and you may experience fewer complications than that of an older patient. Wisdom tooth removal pain may also fade quicker. If you experience anxiety while visiting the dentist, we offer anesthesia options to help put you at ease during the procedure.
What Steps Make Up the Wisdom Tooth Removal Process?
Step 1: Once you are seated in the dentist’s chair, an anesthesiologist will give you a local anesthetic. This numbs the pain sensors around your wisdom teeth. In some cases, a general anesthetic is given to relax the entire body. This most often results in the patient falling asleep.
Step 2: Once the anesthesia is working, your dentist will open up the gum tissue that covers the tooth in need of extraction.
Step 3: Any bone covering the tooth is removed via the new opening in the gum tissue.
Step 4: The tissue that connects the tooth to the bone is separated.
Step 5: The tooth is removed. In instances where the tooth is large or problematic, the tooth is broken into smaller pieces, and the fragments are removed one by one.
Step 6: Dissolvable stitches are inserted to close up the area. A gauze pad is applied to stop the bleeding.
Step 7: The aforementioned steps are repeated for each wisdom tooth requiring removal.
